Diamond
Robert Blair
Robert Blair’s Diamond is a poetic sequence of images taken from the television broadcast of Game 7 of the 2001 World Series between the New York Yankees and the Arizona Diamondbacks. The first image is a crop of the World Series logo where the only legible word is “world.” This is followed by a spread featuring a close-up of an American flag against a blurry military aircraft, triggering the memory of the attacks on the World Trade Center that occurred just over a month before. Images of players, details of expressions, and baseball iconography are punctuated by shots of large crowds and fireworks. While the popular consensus is apt to read these games as an opportunity for healing, these juxtapositions seem to point to the game as a stand-in for the event, casting the spectacle in tragedy and violence. The Risograph printing reproduces these images in an evocative blur of color, mimicking and drawing attention to the warm pixelated fuzz of the television broadcast.
